　　摘要：

　　In this lecture series, I will first give an overview of causal wh questions in both Cantonese and Mandarin, in particular how zěnme ‘how’ (Mandarin) and dim2 ‘how’’(Cantonese) as well as shěnme ‘what’ (Mandarin) and mat1 ‘what’ (Cantonese) are used to express causal-questions, and how they differ in terms of distribution, and the nature of the interpretation.

　　In lectures 1 and 2, I will discuss a puzzle which shows the interactions between the causal questions and aspect markers, as well as modals. I examine the structure of modality and aspectual markers, which can contribute to the answer to the puzzle. I will also discuss actuality entailment of these questions and what that tells us about the nature of these questions.

　　In lectures 3 and 4, I zoom in on causal shěnme (Mandarin) and mat1 (Cantonese), and discuss the source of the causal interpretation, which differ from the causal questions using zěnme ‘how’ (Mandarin) and dim2 ‘how’ (Cantonese). Lastly, I compare the mat1 questions in Cantonese with similar questions in German and Dutch and discuss the source of these interpretations and the structure of these questions.

　　鄭禮珊教授，現任荷蘭萊頓大學語言學系講席教授（Chair Professor）。為荷蘭皇家科學及人文學會會士、歐洲科學院院士。

　　鄭教授于1991年在麻省理工學院獲得博士學位，師從生成語言學創始人諾姆·喬姆斯基教授。畢業后任教于美國加州大學爾灣分校并曾擔任語言學系主任。2000年至今在荷蘭萊頓大學從事語言學教學與研究工作，曾擔任萊頓大學語言學系主任、 Glot International 期刊主編（1996-2003）。2005年協同創辦了萊頓大學大腦與認知研究所。

　　鄭教授是國際知名生成語法學家，注重從語法理論、田野調查和實驗研究三個角度探究語法問題。她不僅側重句法學及其與語義、音系接口等理論研究，而且強調比較句法研究視野和田野調查工作的重要性，近年來開始嘗試將句法與人腦加工相結合的研究路徑。鄭教授研究的語言包括漢語普通話（包括方言）和非洲班圖語（主要是祖魯語（Zulu）和齊切瓦語（Chichewa））。鄭教授研究成果豐碩，在 wh-移位、量化、量詞、關系小句等方面尤為卓著。其博士論文提出的“句類標示假說”（Clause Typing Hypothesis）認為所有語言都必須通過wh-移位或疑問語氣詞（即 wh -in-situ）方式來標記wh疑問句，在學界產生極大影響，至今仍被廣泛引用。
